About AAPHD.

New, young, and ready for you.

Hello! Welcome to our site and thank you for your interest in AAPHD. With a dedicated team of upper-class students at the University of New Mexico, we are pushing our peers to reach for the stars and improve public health dentistry in our community.

Our Mission.

AAPHD serves to provide field awareness to future dental professionals, engage students in dialogue with the community and promote better dental public health through volunteerism, community service, shadowing and research opportunities.

Who We Are.

The American Association of Pubic Health Dentistry (AAPHD) is a student chartered organization at the University of New Mexico. We are a representative body for the national non-profit corporation, "American Association of Pubic Health Dentistry." We and the University of New Mexico Pre-Dental Society (UNM-PDS) work together to encourage our students to get involved. AAPHD is is not a pre-dental organization, however, our chapter is the only one in the US chartered at an undergraduate college. With that being said, we do encourage and promote students to become better dental school applicants. Our members are the future of the dental profession here in New Mexico so there is no better time to step up and lead than now. To do this, we push for involvement in community service, volunteering and shadowing with the local dentists and hygienists.

The UNM Dental Group.

At the beginning of the 2017-2018 academic year, our chapter entered into a Collaborative Agreement with the UNM Pre-Dental Society which went into effect October 1st, 2017. The purpose of this agreement was to better the benefits of our members and better suit the goals of each of the organizations. The collaborative agreement was pursued by the 2017-2018 sitting president Brock James DeSoto and went through completion with the participation of the 2017-2018 sitting president of the Pre-Dental Society, Hannah Paul. These two presidents agreed that the collaboration would be appropriate and beneficial to both groups.

This collaborative agreement binds the two groups as one entity acting as the "UNM Dental Group." The two organizations still represent themselves individually, but act jointly in matters regarding membership, community service, volunteer work, shadowing of any kind with local or out of state dental professionals, workshops that involve the advancement of the field of dentistry and any events involving pre-educational affairs. By jointly acting together on these significant decisions, our two groups will pursue such opportunities more efficiently and at the same time the agreement will allow our two groups to focus on more specific goals and matters.
